Chemin parcouru

Terminer notre visite des îles du Pacifique par les Vanuatus donne l’impression de fermer un cercle car ces îles ressemblent beaucoup à celles du début; les Marquises. Des îles volcaniques verdoyantes où il poussent de beaux fruits tel que d'énormes pamplemousses. De plus, les gens y sont tout aussi accueillant quoique beaucoup plus pauvre. Il est dans leur culture d’accueillir quelqu’un en lui offrant à manger et quand ils nous donnent quelque chose, cela ne veut pas nécessairement dire qu’ils s’attendent à recevoir en retour. Par ailleurs, ils ont de la nourriture en abondance mais peu des autres nécessités ainsi ils ne disent pas

non à un t-shirt, une casquette, des petits hameçons ou autre. En outre ils se remettent des effets destructif d’un gros cyclone qui avait ravagé certaines de leurs cultures. Gaston a aussi été recruté par un curé pour réparer une installation de panneaux solaires. Ce pays à fait partie de la France et de l’Angleterre mais à déclaré son indépendance depuis des années déjà. Maintenant, ils reçoivent de l’aide de l’Australie. Un autre point en commun avec les Marquises sont les mouillages rouleurs. Ceux de Port-Vila et de Port Sandwich sont bien protégés mais plusieurs autres doivent être choisis en fonction des vents. De plus, nous nous sommes fait un peu peur près de Espirito Santo à l’approche de Lunganville car la vague y était monstrueuse. Nos coups de coeur furent port Sandwich pour son ambiance avec les copains navigateurs et l’île Gaua pour son authenticité. 

On nous avait parlé que les infections de la peau étaient particulièrement présentes dans ce coin du monde alors, quand j’ai un peu éraflé ma cheville sur une roche en débarquant de l’annexe, j’ai bien surveillé la plaie et je l’ai nettoyée au peroxyde tel qu’indiqué.  Pendant les deux premiers jours, elle semblait guérir normalement mais, au troisième jour, elle a grossi, est devenu blanche et c’est mise à suinter. En chemin pour la clinique sur l’île Sola, nous avons rencontré un médecin qui a pris la peine de nous expliquer qu’il venait de quitter le dispensaire pour aller manger avant que sa remplaçante arrive mais, de pas nous en faire car elle ne devrait pas tarder. Effectivement, après 5 minutes d’attente, elle arrive et comme nous étions les seuls, me reçoit immédiatement. C’est à peine si elle a regardé la plaie que déjà elle écrivait la prescription tout en s’excusant de ne pas avoir autre chose en pharmacie que de la pénicilline pure. Ça vas, je n’ai pas d’allergie. Elle me demande l’équivalent d’environ 1$ pour la consultation. À la pharmacie, le monsieur me demande aussi la même somme pour les médicaments. En marchant vers Gaston, je me dis que je m’en sors à bon prix quand le pharmacien quittant le bureau de la médecin, m’intercepte pour me remettre ce que je lui avais donné en me disant que j’avais déjà payé (le 1$ comprenait la consultation et les antibiotiques). Serviable et honnête! J’étais gêné de reprendre l’argent.
Nous avons retardé un peu notre départ car pendant que je soignais mon infection, Gaston à attrapé un gros rhume d'homme. Nous ne trouvions pas très sage de partir pour 22 jours en mer avant d’être rétabli tous les deux. 

C’est la première fois que nous ne pouvions pas aller au marché et à l’épicerie pour s’approvisionner pour une longue traversée. D’ailleurs, nous sommes parti moins chargés qu’à l’habitude. Il y a de quoi acheter à Port-Villa mais les tablettes sont déjà moins garnies à Lunganville et, une fois à Sola, les épiceries n’ont plus de frigo. Les différents villages de l’île se partagent le marché à un jour de semaine par endroit mais, seulement un d’entre eux vend des légumes. Vous pouvez vous imaginez que les quelques légumes ont à peine le temps de reposer sur les étals avant de s’envoler.  J’ai donc essayé d’être plus créative en

demandant aux habitants au nord de Gaua de bien vouloir nous aider contre de l’argent. Ils avaient de très bonnes intentions mais j’ai réalisé qu’ils n’ont aucun concept de conservation. N’ayant pas de frigo, ils ne tuent jamais de bêtes à l’avance. De plus, ils ne cueillent que ce qui est mûr et qui se mange immédiatement car ils retournent au jardin à tous les deux jours. Essayer de leur expliquer que le bateau copain et nous avons chacun un frigo alors nous pourrions chacun conserver une poule pour la traversée n’a eu aucun effet. Ils nous ont fourni qu’une seule poule toute maigrichonne pour les deux bateaux. Elle était encore en vie au grand malheur de Gaston qui a été élu pour la tuer et la plumer.  De même pour les légumes qui étaient trop mûrs et en quantités insuffisantes pour une vingtaine de jour. Ceci dit, nous avions fait des stocks de conserves en Nouvelle-Zélande et nous avons pêché quelques poissons en chemin alors nous avons eu de quoi manger jusqu’au Timor Oriental. De toute façon, nous mangeons toujours moins en navigation.

Completing our visit of the Pacific Islands by a stop in Vanuatu gave us the impression of going full circle because these islands are very similar to those of the beginning; the Marquesas. Green volcanic islands where beautiful fruits grow such as the giant grapefruits. In addition, people are just as welcoming, though much poorer. It is in their culture to welcome someone with something to eat. So when they offer us something, that does not necessarily mean they expect to receive in return. On the other hand, they have plenty of food but not much of the other necessities. To top it off, they are still getting back on their feet after

being hit by a big cyclone a couple of years back. So, they do not say no to a t-shirt, cap, little hooks, or whatever else we can give. Gaston was also recruited by a priest to repair a solar panel installation. This country was part of France and England but has declared its independence years ago. Now, they are getting help from Australia. Another point in common with the Marquesas is the rolly anchorages. Those in Port Vila and Port Sandwich are well protected but many more must be chosen according to the winds of the moment. We also got a little scared going to Espirito Santo just before the pass to Lunganville because the waves were monstrous. Our favorites stops were Port Sandwich for its atmosphere with fellow cruisers and the island Gaua for its authenticity.

We had been told that skin infections were particularly prevalent in this part of the world, so when I scraped my ankle a little on a rock getting of the dinghy, I looked after the wound carefully and I cleaned with peroxide as indicated. For the first two days, it seemed to be healing normally, but on the third day, it got bigger, became white, and was oozing. On the way to the clinic on Sola Island, we met a doctor who took the courtesy of explaining to us that he had just left to go eat before his replacement arrived but, we should not worry since she should be back shortly. Indeed, after 5 minutes of waiting, she arrived and, since we were the only ones, looked after me immediately. She scarcely peaked at the wound and was already writing the prescription all the while apologizing for not having anything else in the pharmacy but pure penicillin. It's ok, I do not have any allergies. She asks me for the equivalent of about $ 1 for the consultation. At the pharmacy, the gentleman also asks me the same amount for the drugs. As I was walking back towards Gaston, telling myself that I got off with a good price, the pharmacist coming out of the doctor's office, intercepts me to give me back what I gave him while telling me that I had already paid. Helpful and honest! I was embarrassed to take back the money. We delayed our departure from the country a little because while I was treating my infection, Gaston caught a cold. We did not find it very wise to leave for 22 days at sea before having had time to heal.

This is the first time we can’t go to the market and the grocery store to stock up for a long crossing. So we ended up leaving with less food than usual. There is enough to buy in the capital of Port-Villa. In Lunganville, the shelves are already less garnished. By the time we got to Sola, the grocery stores no longer had refrigerators. The different villages of the last island share the market. Each village gets a day to sell stuff per weekbut but only one of them sells vegetables. You can imagine that the few vegetables barely have time to be set on the tables before they are taken away. So, I tried to be more creative by asking people

in the north of Gaua to help us in exchange for money. They had very good intentions but I realized that they have no concept of conservation. Not having a fridge to keep meat means they never kill animals in advance. They also don’t eat meat regularly. In the gardens, they pick only what is ripe and eat it immediately because they return there every other day. Trying to explain to them that our friends and us each had a fridge to each keep a chicken for the crossing had no affect. They provided us with just one skinny chicken for both boats. It was still alive to Gaston’s great  displeasure since he was elected to kill and pluck it. Similarly, the vegetables were too ripe and in insufficient quantities for twenty days. That said, we had stocked up on cans and other dry foods in New Zealand on one hand and on the other, we caught some fish along the way so we didn’t starve. We always eat less when at sea anyway.
