Se rendre en Alaska: la stratégie./Getting to Alaska: The strategy.

Suite à la consultation des " Routes de grande croisière " et " Escales de grande croisière " de Jimmy Cornell, des pilots charts du Pacifique, d'un navigateur de la région et des cartes météos, notre intention est d'aller chercher le 160°O et faire du nord jusqu'au 40°N avant de pointer l'étrave plus à l'est. Ensuite, jusqu'au 50°N avant d'aller directement sur Sitka. Pourquoi? Et bien, devinez ce qu'il y a au nord-est de Hawaï? C'est ça; un gros anti-cyclone. Et qu'es-ce qu'il n'y a pas dans le centre d'un anti-cyclone? Du vent! C'est bien, vous faites de bons élèves! A vrai dire, il y en a encore une autre zone au Nord-Ouest donc le truc est de passer entre les deux et tourner seulement une fois rendu au Nord de celle à l'Est. Mélangeant? Nous risquons d'avoir des vents d'est et de nord-est au départ, de la pétole entre le 25°N et le 30°N et des vents variables entre le 30°N et le 40?°N et de l'ouest à sud-ouest pour le reste du chemin. Il faut monter jusqu'au 50°N avant notre dernier tournant car il y a possibilité de coup de vent du nord-ouest dans le Golf d'Alaska. C'est du moins la théorie. Reste à voir ce que ça va donner en pratique. Nous avons choisi Sitka plutôt que Dutch Harbour ou Kodiak surtout par manque de temps. Vu que nous sommes tard dans la saison, d'aller plus au sud va nous donner un répit sur la descente vers Vancouver.

After consulting the " World cruising routes" and the " World cruising handbook " from Jimmy Cornell, the North Pacific pilot charts, a sailor from the region and the weather maps, our intention is to head to longitude 160?W while heading north. Then follow that line North until the latitude 40°N before turning a little more East. At 50°N, we will turn east again to head directly to Sitka. Why? Try and guess what can be found at Hawaii's North-East? That's right; a big anticyclone. And what is missing in the middle of anticyclone? Wind! Good, you make good students! Actually, there is also another zone to the North-West so the trick is to pass in between and head east only when we will be north of the eastern zone. Confusing? We will surely have East to North-East winds at the beginning, not much wind between 25°N and 30°N, changing winds between 30°N and 40°N and West to South-West winds for the rest of the way. We have to go up to 50°N before our last turn to avoid the possibility of gale force winds from the North-West in the Gulf of Alaska. At least, this is the theory. Now we will see what happens in practice. We chose Sitka rather than Dutch Harbour, Kodiak or Anchorage mostly because of the time left in the season. Since we are late, this will give us a chance to enjoy the south of Alaska a bit longer before we have to move on to Vancouver.
